When I think of owls now, I think of my childhood, peering up at my grandmother’s glass curio cabinet, teeming with fragile owl statues. At the time I didn’t understand why I couldn’t play with them: so much of my grandmother’s house and things were fragile, special. Because or despite this, I had a small cache of toys that lived exclusively there. But I always longed for the owls, to cup them in my hands, to pet their little ceramic heads.
One day, perhaps because she felt she had enough, or was tired of only being gifted them, she announced she was done collecting owls. Many of her owls were carefully wrapped and stored elsewhere, while only her very favorites remained on view. I wish I had thought to ask her then, as I was older, what her fascination with them was. Or perhaps I did, and the reason is lost to me now, as so painfully much is when grief cleaves us from each other. Our ability to process death is personal the way dreams are, and if enough time goes on, we naturally mythologize those who are lost to us: remembering the little details as if they were rare precious gems.
The Great Horned Owl was my grandmother’s favorite owl; at once regal and fierce, undeniably beautiful. Here, a Great horned owl’s ‘horns’ are longer and ornamental, meant to invoke a creature of fairytale and myth, and of course my beloved, my forever home, no matter where she is.

Owl:
Owls are nocturnal birds of prey that rule over the night. Gifted with the ability to traverse the dark via both a keen sense of hearing/seeing and with soft tail edges that make them undetectable to their prey. Many owls live mostly in solitude, roosting and hunting alone. Because of their ability to expertly navigate in darkness, they are thought to be connected to the unseen world of spirits and magic. Due to this association, they are considered messengers between worlds, silently slipping back and forth.
Due to its stealth while hunting, the Owl is often seen as a symbol of death, marking it as a protectionary being. Seen with Goddesses of lore such as Athena and Hecate, the Owl is also been known to be companions of shamans who call on their powers to connect to Spirits and the Spirit World. Its intelligence and cunning whilst hunting have lent to the saying ‘Wise as an Owl.’
