The image of the flaming heart is rooted in the sacred hearts of the Roman Catholic Church. In the late 1600’s, a French nun, Margaret Mary Alacoque, had a vision of Jesus with an exposed heart that emanated light and was also clearly wounded. This led to the disembodied hearts of Jesus, Mary and Joseph being worshipped, each with their own distinct symbolic visual elements, but all aflame. This symbol would spread to Mexican folk art where it’s regarded as el corazón sagrado or, the sacred heart.
The sacred heart represents love, faith, compassion, hope, beauty, and also, pain. This acknowledgement of pain has always interested me, & I have loved this symbol since a child who had an incredibly Catholic grandmother. However, it took on more resonance for me when it was used throughout Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version of Romeo + Juliet, making it synonymous for me as a high schooler, with passion and romance, however ill fated. A commingling of the sacred and the profane, of love that conquers death. ( see also: 1994’s The Crow ). The conjoining of this beloved image with romance became a turning point for me in my spiritual/aesthetic interests: the macabre married to beauty.
Much like the Phoenix that sets itself on fire only to be reborn from the ashes of its own feathers and bones, we set ourselves aflame with passion as much as heartbreak. We each have secret chambers in our heart that we consider “feel to much” and perhaps we endeavor to smother the flames of our feels, our intensity. This heart is a talisman for staying alive, for keeping with the trouble, for feeling it all, for not allowing the world to incinerate who you are.
This power of fire holds beauty; light, warmth, protection, a contrast against dark nights and dark moods. Yet it also has the potential to destroy when not cared for properly or through the fierceness of Mother Nature. Imposed on the image of a heart, fire heightens all of the symbols of it: love, creativity, passion, empathy, while also a reminder of heartbreak.
Here, a dimensional and double sided pendant in the form of the classic symbol of the heart is enveloped in flames, reminiscent of the image of the sacred heart while also more deeply embedded in fire, a radiant heart that mimics the sun, our greatest star.
This is for my fellow sensitive people who continually cremate their hearts in empathy.
This is for the artists who seek inspiration and creative energy during the “drier” days.
This is for the broken hearted and the grieving: bringing with it the promise of renewal.
This is for the most passionate amongst us as a reminder not to burn too bright.
