Life cast bat bones in our 'bat lace' design create a web like frame for a stunning trillion cut Green Rutilated Quartz gemstone.
The Moirai { also known as The Fates } are a trio of sisters known to be born to Nyx, primordial Goddess of the Night. Respected and feared even by Zeus, they were the weavers & spinners of the fates of both mortals as well as the immortals, laying out the path of thread of destiny for the lives of all. Once a life was over, Atropos, “The Inevitable” would take her shears and cut the “thread ” thus ending the path of destiny, while also choosing the manner of the mortals death; sending the shade to the Underworld where it would descend to the ferryman Charon to begin its journey to Hades.
The concept of Fate/Destiny has always been interesting to me, something I feel I’ve shouldered or collided into, while other times, I feel I’ve taken the reins of my own fate, for better or worse. This talisman represents the tension of this duality while also carrying with it the symbol of the Egyptian burial Tomb / Pyramid ~ suggesting both laying to rest the threads of ‘fate’ or dreams that we pursued that didn’t work out or that wounded us, as well as the dreams / fate we hope will come to fruition, the fate we hope will play out in our favor, giving us the little extra boost that the shape of the pyramid, raised the the solar energies ( Ra ) that the Egyptians favored, may bestow.
Additionally, this is a gentle reminder that there are some threads that need to be cut - that although Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos may “historically’ weave and spin the threads of our fate amongst our ancestors ( in different iterations ), that perhaps we still have the ability to cut the threads to weave our own paths, to leave situations, people, places, dreams, and even versions of ourselves behind us when they become too inky, if we are able to do so.
Bats:
Bats and their cast wing and leg bones have long been a component I’ve used in my visual library as a way of creating a personal visual language. As nocturnal creatures, I feel a kinship with their natural predilection for the night time hours, but I’m also interested in how they use sonar to ‘see’, how as a metaphor bats as liminal creatures also remind us to look closer with our other senses, a way of ‘seeing the unseen.’ It’s my hope and intention that pairing them with other chthonic imagery and myth further adds to the visual meaning I’m aiming for, creating a collage of personal ideas while also tethering these physical jeweled objects to the spirit of the bat ( and other natural objects in the case of other jewels in my collection ) and to the spirit of the myths I’m invoking.
